Two people remain in custody for investigation of assault after an apparent road rage shooting this weekend on Interstate 90 that left a 3-year-old girl injured from flying glass.
The pair, a 31-year-old Tacoma man and a 20-year-old woman from Malaga, Wash., are being held in the Kittitas County jail, according to Washington State Trooper Rich Magnussen.
The shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, about four miles east of Snoqualmie Pass.
Magnussen said two cars were driving east in the same lane, when the driver of a 1996 Toyota Corolla began following a 1992 Acura Integra closely and flashed its high beams.
The driver of the Acura, Ismael Mejia, 59, of Mount Vernon, Wash., pulled his car off the road, allowing the Toyota to pass. With him in the car were 25-year-old Scott Camyn, the 3-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl, all from Warden, Wash.
Once back on the road, Mejia eventually pulled along side the Toyota on the inside lane and was apparently trying to pass when three shots were fired and struck his vehicle, Magnussen said.
Except for the 3-year-old girl, who sustained minor cuts to her neck, none of the other three passengers in the Integra was injured.
Magnussen said the victims called 9-1-1 on a cell phone and that troopers in Easton stopped the Toyota.
A handgun was recovered from the car.
According to The Associated Press, none of the occupants in either car knew each other. The Tacoma man also faces a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. And the woman had an outstanding warrant on a drug charge.
