Onsite Class: Gunfire on campus – A shooting at the mall
This onsite class is designed to give teens and college students some plans of action to think about were they ever to be caught up in a shooting incident.
What to Expect: This two hour training will be paced & delivered in a manner to empower students, NOT to scare them.
The Level Headed Approach: We think of this training not much unlike defensive driving training. Even though we have no intention of testing the skills we have learned, we still want them tucked away and ready to utilize just in case a bad situation develops.
No Time to Think: Shooting incidents, much like automobile accidents, unfold so rapidly there is usually no time to think and barely time to react. Those who have training tend to default to their “muscle memory bank” of response options and react immediately. Those who don’t very often freeze up like a “deer in the headlights” and valuable seconds will tick by as they try to think through the confusion and terror of the moment.
My Personal Experience: I was on the receiving end of gunfire as a teenager and have experienced that terror and confusion first hand. The person I was with had training, reacted and saved my life. I want to pass along the things that I have learned and that we share with our corporate clients to you.
Here are some of the topics we will cover during the training:
- The importance of awareness of your surroundings & reading body language as pre indicators that something might be amiss. After all, avoidance is always the best strategy.
- Always knowing where additional exit doors or routes are if your primary should be cut off.
- Identifying “hard points”. What would I take cover behind if I couldn’t evacuate the area?
- Would I huddle with a group of people or not?
- Where would I go and where would I NOT go?
- How accurate are handguns & just because someone has one do they have direct control of me?
- How to react to a SWAT team and what NOT to do when the police arrive!
….and much more……
